6 new charges against Aung San Suu Kyi

KATHMANDU: Aung San Suu Kyi, a civilian leader ousted after a military coup in Myanmar, was charged with a new criminal offense on Monday, her lawyer said.

Suu Kyi has been charged in six more cases. His lawyer, Meen Mein Sole, told AFP that Napita Five and Yangu had been charged. The lawyer further said that the latest allegation was under the country's natural disaster management law.

At least 80 people were killed Sunday when the army used direct force in a protest against military rule in Myanmar's northeastern city of Bago. More than 600 people have been killed in military operations in Myanmar since the country took power on February 1.

The military has claimed widespread fraud during the election. In that election, Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy (NLD) party were elected. The Election Commission had rejected the allegation of fraud.
