CPN (M) withdraws support to government

Kathmandu: The CPN-Maoist has withdrawn its support to the government. Chief Whip of the UCPN (M) Dev Gurung informed Ujyalo that the letter of withdrawal was handed over to the Parliament Secretariat.

Even after the Supreme Court's decision revived the CPN-UML and the Maoist Center, the Maoist Center had not yet withdrawn its support to the government. Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has called for a vote of confidence through a special session of the House of Representatives.

A meeting of the Maoist Standing Committee held yesterday had decided to withdraw its support to the government. According to the UCPN-M, the letter was submitted to take legal action as KP Sharma Oli is still the Prime Minister even after the dissolution of the parliament.

The UCPN (M) has 49 MPs in the House of Representatives. Withdrawing support, the government now has only 121 CPN-UML MPs. Prime Minister Oli needs 136 out of 267 MPs to get a vote of confidence. With 15 MPs from other parties, Prime Minister Oli can sustain the government he leads. However, as the Khanal-Nepal faction within the CPN (Maoist) is also looking for an alternative to Oli, it is not easy for Prime Minister Oli to get a vote of confidence.
