KP Sharma Oli: The Prime Minister failed to get a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has failed to get a vote of confidence from the House of Representatives.

A vote of confidence in accordance with Article 100 of the Constitution was taken at a meeting of the House of Representatives on Monday in which 124 lawmakers opposed Oli.

Although the Prime Minister's party has 121 MPs from the CPN-UML, MPs from the Madhav Nepal-Jhala Nath Khanal faction were absent from the meeting.

Speaker Agni Sapkota declared that 93 MPs voted for Oli and 124 against.

UML chief whip Vishal Bhattarai had issued a whip to all his party MPs to attend the sitting and vote in favor of the no-confidence motion. Amid fears that dissident lawmakers would not support the vote of confidence, Bhattarai also drew the attention of lawmakers to the Political Parties Act and the party's constitution.

In the House of Representatives, the Nepali Congress (two suspended in 63 MPs) and the CPN-Maoist Center (49 MPs) had earlier decided not to support Oli.

The Janata Samajwadi Party of Nepal has a total of 34 MPs, two of whom are currently suspended.
