CPN : Will Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli be able to escape the party's infighting again?

 

Within the ruling Communist Party of Nepal (CPN), the demand for the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has risen sharply.

He was sharply criticized at a meeting of the CPN (Maoist) Standing Committee in Baluwatar on Sunday after the Prime Minister said that India and leaders within his own party were trying to remove him from office.

Other top leaders and standing committee members from Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda are among those demanding his resignation.

This is not the first time that voices have been raised within the party against Prime Minister Oli and his resignation.

Past dissatisfaction

Oli, who has spent nearly two-and-a-half years as prime minister, has been repeatedly criticized for holding both the post of party chairman and prime minister.

At times, however, the demand for his resignation has been strong, but Oli seems to have succeeded in some way.

The last such protest was seen two months ago when members of the standing committee signed and demanded a meeting.

Oli was in the minority in both the secretariat meeting and the standing committee meeting.

However, a meeting of the secretariat held last April while the standing committee was demanding a meeting was settled after the issue of the resignation of the prime minister was not on the agenda of the secretariat meeting.

   

Hard this time?

This time, analysts say, the prime minister is under more pressure from within the party than in the past.

Political analyst Tika Dhakal said, “In the past, the issue was discussed only in the secretariat meeting but now it is seen in the standing committee meeting. So it's serious. "

"Not only the resignation of the prime minister but also the possibility of a split in the party seems to have been raised."

"Not only the post of the prime minister but also the issue of power sharing within the party has been raised and I don't think the prime minister can escape so easily this time," added analyst Dhakal.

'Solid Conclusions Come Out'

Party spokesperson Narayan Kaji Shrestha said that it was not possible to say how the dissatisfaction would spread.

But Shrestha, who is considered close to Prachanda, said that a squeeze was coming out of the meeting this time.

Does that mean the prime minister resigns?

Shrestha said, "It cannot be said that this is the post of the prime minister while the members of the standing committee are discussing."

"But this time the discussion will lead to concrete results. I am confident that a positive path will emerge for the future of the party and the government."

A meeting of the 45-member standing committee, which was adjourned after five members spoke on Wednesday, is being held on Thursday.

Prachanda has been expressing dissatisfaction since the unification of the party, saying that Prime Minister Oli is the hub despite having two chairpersons.

   

What happens now

Analyst Shyam Shrestha also says that the situation is more uncomfortable for the Prime Minister this time than in the past.

He said, "Leaders will not give loan waiver for the prime minister this time as in the past. Prachanda, Jhalanath [Khanal], Madhav Kumar Nepal and Bamdev [Gautam] are all against him and are frustrated by past assurances. ”

Shrestha added, "Even if we demand the resignation of the Prime Minister, the real problem is the issue of power sharing." It is difficult but not impossible for the Prime Minister to find a solution. ”

According to him, in the past, the leaders and members of the Standing Committee, who had expressed dissatisfaction only with the issue of partition, are now overwhelmed by the accusations leveled by the Prime Minister against India and the 'arrogance of the Prime Minister who does not consider anyone else'.

'Hard to resign'

Analyst Dhakal says, "But I see little chance of him resigning through parliamentary means unless he resigns voluntarily."

"There is a problem that the party will split, but that will not be the case. After all, the issue of personal interests and power-sharing among leaders has become a hot topic in the past. ”

Analyst Shrestha also agrees.

"I do not think the prime minister will resign under any circumstances," he said.

"Ego tussle is also seen among the leaders who have raised their voices against him. But they do not seem to be confident in the loan agreement," Shrestha added.
