The world needs a mask rather than a nuclear weapon: Prime Minister Oli

Kathmandu: Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has said that the world needs a mask rather than a nuclear weapon.

In a virtual address to the 75th General Assembly of the United Nations, he said the world now needs more masks than guns and stressed the need to invest in it. He said the world's total military spending would reach 1.9 trillion US dollars in 2019, a small portion of which would provide relief to millions of people living in poverty and deprivation.

Stating that investment is needed in the social sector for survival, he stressed on the need to reduce military expenditure for the destruction of lives. Oli is of the opinion that in order to keep the world safe in the current situation where disarmament processes, including the Nuclear Treaty Review Conference, have been postponed, the parties concerned must fulfill their obligations under the treaty.

Speaking on the eve of the International Day for the Abolition of Nuclear Weapons, he expressed concern that human beings would have to pay a heavy price for arms race, armament of outer space and cyber warfare.
