Study of mountaineering at Manikam Devi Secondary School in Laprak, Gorkha
Dhan Bahadur Gurung, the principal of the school, said that the school has started teaching in class 11 under an agreement with the Nepal Mountain Training Institute under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation. He said that the goal is to gradually increase it to teaching up to post-graduate level.
"Our country has great potential for tourism and mountaineering. We have started teaching as an elective subject in class 11 and 12 as it seems that we have not done what we can do, 'he said.' An agreement has been reached between the school and the Nepal Mountain Training Institute. The village municipality has coordinated and cooperated in this. It is believed that it will attract a lot of students. Principal Gurung informed that 43 students have been enrolled in class 11 this year for the study of the subject.
Gurung says that the school has given more importance to experimental learning as the theoretical teaching and learning activities are less effective in Nepal. For which the necessary physical infrastructure for rock climbing, hill climbing, rock garden, canyoning etc. has been prepared.
The Nepal Mountain Training Institute has agreed to provide experienced trainers, courses and materials to teach tourism and mountaineering subjects to the school and to appoint students studying in Bachelor of Mountaineering Studies (BMS) and Master of Adventure Tourism Studies (MAT) as interns. Similarly, the school has entered into an agreement with the instructor to employ the course and teach on the basis of semester system. The first agreement is for a period of three years.
Minister for Industry, Tourism, Forest and Environment Bikas Lamsal has inaugurated the school.
