Myanmar president arrested, including Aung San Suu Kyi, phone and internet blocked in the capital

KATHMANDU: Myanmar's army has arrested Aung San Suu Kyi and other top government officials. The army detained them following tensions between the army and the civilian government. The military has said the election was rigged. The National League for Democracy declared victory in last November's election. This is the second election since the end of military rule in Myanmar. Myanmar, also known as Burma, was under military rule until 2011. President Yu Wein-mint has also been arrested, along with Aung San Suu Kyi. He was arrested by the army on Monday morning. Troops have been marching on the streets of the capital since their arrest. Internet and phone lines have also been cut in Myanmar's capital. The army has also visited the homes of the chief ministers and arrested them.

On January 29, 16 international diplomatic missions in Myanmar, including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia, issued a joint statement urging the military to adhere to democratic values. He said he would oppose any attempt to change the outcome of the election or disrupt Myanmar's democratic transition.

Aung San Suu Kyi was known as a pro-democracy leader. She had spent almost two decades in detention. Her party did worse than expected from opinion polls, which saw them gaining about a third of the seats. The post was created using a constitutional loophole after he was barred from becoming president. Recently, he has been criticized internationally for genocide against the Rohingya Muslim community.
