Sugarcane farmers in Kathmandu saying they have not received payment as per the agreement

Kathmandu: Sugarcane farmers have returned to Kathmandu saying that they have not received payment as per the agreement.

Rakesh Mishra, the patron of the Sugarcane Farmers' Struggle Committee, said that they had to come to Kathmandu to put pressure on the government as they have not yet received payment of Rs 150 million from the sugar mill. 

After the sugarcane farmers staged an agitation in Kathmandu last December, the sugar mills had paid only a small amount. After 16 days of agitation, the government and the Sugarcane Farmers' Struggle Committee had reached a four-point agreement. Prior to that, an agreement was signed between farmers and sugar mill industrialists at the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies on December 3, 2008.

Sugarcane farmers have complained that they have not been able to pay all the dues even though they have agreed to pay all the dues including the grant to be given by the government by January 22.

Earlier, when he came to Kathmandu, the opposition Congress had promised to meet the demand and now that the Congress-led government has been formed, he has come to Kathmandu to draw attention, said Mishra.
